Meanwhile the stimulating walk that was to help Gavin and Heidi burn off the excess calories they had consumed at lunch was interrupted by a chance meeting with Paul and Courtney.

"We meet again," Courtney said.

"Hey. Are you guys following us?" Gavin asked.

Paul laughed. "If we were following you, wouldn't we have come from the same direction you did?"

"Touché. I should have used the word stalking. So how are you?"

"Can't complain. Well, I could, but it wouldn't do me any good."

Some more walkers came up from behind Gavin. His party of four was somewhat blocking the trail. He looked over and saw a nearby picnic table. "Wanna sit a spell and chat?"

Courtney nodded and pulled her husband toward the table. Gavin and Heidi followed.

"Maybe we should have changed directions when we saw you coming," Paul said.

"Why's that?" Heidi asked.

"You kind of messed with our minds the last time we met."

"And you don't want that to happen again?"

Paul shrugged. "Part of me doesn't. The other part of me wants to take a pickaxe to this doubt you placed in our minds and get rid of it. Well, mostly Courtney's mind. She's been asking me a lot of questions since our chat session."

"I've been bugging him about something that's bugging me. Scientists try to avoid the concept of miracles, but I don't see how they totally can do that. Your chicken and egg analogy almost drove me crazy. How could any creatures reproduce until the organs and processes necessary for reproduction evolved? To make it more complex, a male and female had to evolve in different ways. How could that happen? And if they couldn't reproduce, where did they come from in the first place and why did that species not disappear after the first one died? But small changes caused by non directed mutations take many generations to manifest. How could there be multiple generations without the reproductive processes?"

Paul waggled a finger at Gavin. "See what mayhem you've caused. You're like that guy, Dr. Mayhem, in the automobile insurance commercial. We've been arguing almost non stop since you planted seed of doubt in Courtney's mind."

"You give me too much credit. Don't you think that God might be doing a work in her? I bet both of your parents have never quit praying that you guys would come back to the Lord. Their prayers are not going to return to them void, you know."

"Their prayers have gone unanswered for a long time."

"But until you die, you always have the chance to answer them."

"We don't live to make our parents happy. We have our own lives."

Gavin flashed a grin at Heidi. "So what brilliant theories did you come up with to answer Courtney's questions? Is there an evolution website where you can get spoonfed all the answers to all of the creationists' questions?"

"I don't need people putting words in my mouth. I've perfectly capable of doing my own thinking."

"So what are your thoughts, Paul?" Heidi asked.

"I think I said everything I needed to say last time we spoke.
